What is osteopenia?

Osteopenia is low bone mass for age and the child with JRA (Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis) is at great risk for failure to achieve adequate postpubertal bone mass.

Literally osteopenia mean ‘bone poverty’, of which there are four grouped causes:
*Osteoporosis
*Osteomalacia
*Hyperparathyroidism
*Myeloma

Osteopenia is decreased bone density that is not as severe as osteoporosis. It is a warning sign for women that they are at risk of osteoporosis.

It can be a precursor to osteoporosis, though not everyone with osteopenia develops osteoporosis.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is an example of too much resorption of both bone matrix and mineral. A combination of these causes results in the undermineralization present in the majority of osteopenic disorders.

Preventing bone loss involves more than just taking calcium supplements. It involves:
*Exercising at least three hours weekly
*Eliminating soda from diet
*Adding vitamin and mineral supplementation
*Starting to take calcium supplements prior to menopause.
